Wooden bar stools are attractive and versatile, but they do require more care than metal bar stools. If you have wood bar stools, just a bit of maintenance will keep them smooth, shiny, and splinter-free.

Tips for Wooden Bar Stools

Caring for your stools doesn't require a large time investment, or a great deal of effort. Follow these few tips to get the most out of your stools.

Avoid prolonged sun exposure

. If you use your stools outdoors, cover them with an opaque cover when they're not in use. If possible, move them to a shaded location to prevent the heat of the sun from drying out the wood.

Avoid prolonged exposure to water

. You should also keep outdoor stools away from prolonged water exposure from sprinklers, rain, or snow. It's best to store your stools somewhere dry during the rainy season and during heavy summer rains. If you water the yard regularly, position your bar and stools away from the lawn and flowerbeds.

Varnish as necessary

. After a few years, you may notice the varnish or lacquer starting to fade. Sand it off and reapply fresh varnish to prevent moisture from reaching the wood.

Wipe up spills and stains immediately

. Never let liquids or stains dry on the stools. Quickly wipe up spills with a cloth. Use mild soap or furniture polish to remove stains.

Dust regularly

. A dust remover designed for wood will keep both the wood and the varnish in great condition. In addition to the seat, dust the legs and support beams, especially in crevices where dust can gather.

Oil unvarnished wood

. If your stools are unvarnished, rub wood oil into them to maintain the natural moisture and reduce the chances of fading and splintering. You'll know it's time to oil the wood when it starts to feel rough and dry to the touch.

Avoid using solvents near the stools

. Solvents like nail polish remover, paint remover, and pure alcohol can damage the wood or strip the stain or varnish. Avoid using these near your stools and wipe up any spills immediately.

Wooden stools can stand up to some abuse, but you should maintain them just as you would any other piece of furniture if you want them to last for years.
