Fiberglass is incredibly strong and durable, while still amazingly light. Typically used for the hulls on boats and on shower doors, fiberglass became popular for barstools in the 1950s for the atomic, futuristic style of the material. Whether you find vintage fiberglass barstools or opt for brand new ones, you'll be sure to complement your décor with their wide range of colors and funky feel.

Most brand new fiberglass bar stools look the same. With a scoop seat that rises into a low back and falls into a gentle taper that joins with a chrome base, these barstools are completely hip and very distinctive. Most fiberglass barstools come with chrome footrests and a swivel mechanism. A pneumatic lifter in the base allows you to adjust the height of your stool, which is perfect if your bar requires an extra tall barstool. The fiberglass is easy to color, so although silver, red, and black are traditional colors, you have a wide range of options. You can also find novelty stools shaped like bottle caps made out of fiberglass, but these are less common.

Vintage fiberglass barstools are less uniform and at online auctions and local flea markets, you can be lucky enough to find fiberglass bucket seats, flat stools, high backs, and swivel barstools.

Keeping Your Fiberglass Bar Stools Clean

One extra nice feature of fiberglass is that it is very easy to clean, which can be helpful if you have children or messy adults. A mild detergent diluted with water or even diluted white vinegar will remove most spills or stains from your barstool's surface. The chrome on the base and footrest might be more difficult to clean and may require a polisher. You can find good chrome cleaners at motorcycle repair stores, but you should move your barstools to the driveway or the porch to clean them as you should only use these cleaners outdoors.

Because fiberglass bar stools are so unique they may not be for your kitchen or bar, but they're worth consideration if you love the 50s style and want an eye catching look in your home.
